Samples of Student Hawaiian Shirt Designs.
Following is a collection of layouts for a Hawaiian Shirt design project that I give to my Introduction to Digital Media students from our Art and Design Foundation students. In this project they explore illustration, pattern creation, pattern duplication and offsetting, layer management, blending modes, masking, radial gradients, the Shape Builder tool, the Pathfinder Palette and special effects such as drop shadows. The students design an unique pattern related to a central theme or idea then trace a basic shirt from a template and apply the pattern to the shirt components with appropriate offsets. They also design a label in the "Aloha Label" style as well as a button with gradients applied, button holes and threads. The students give their shirt an unique name and create a clothing brand name that will appear on a shirt label with a fabric texture applied.

In the words of Kimberly Sun: "The flower is an Orchid called Guaria Morada (Purple Country Girl) and it is Costa Rica's national flower. The label is the outline of Arenal Volcano and lake so it is meant to be a national brand."
